The Lake Tahoe Airport, in keeping with City government and regional goals, will be in a world-class general aviation facility providing significant sustainable benefit to the community while utilizing the best available technology to measure and improve performance.
The City of South Lake Tahoe, as sponsor of the Airport, retains the right for commercial airline service. Airline service will improve the local economy by reducing traffic congestion and the vehicle miles traveled as well as provide a link into and out of the Basin in conjunction with the regional transportation plan while integrating all available local public/private transportation systems.
The South Lake Tahoe Airport will continue to enhance public safety for its residents, visitors and businesses through the creation of an emergency operation center. The center will coordinate disaster management which includes firefighting, the hospital mutual-aid system, and medical transport facilities within the Tahoe Basin for fire and non-fire emergences by providing access to and from the Basin in the event of natural disaster such as catastrophic wildfire, earthquakes, mudslides and road closures.
City government will continue to strive to utilize Green Technology and Best Management Practices on public lands and be environmentally progressive in the operation and management of the airport. City government supports the Upper Truckee River Restoration Project, Alternative 2, as recommended by the Technical Advisory Committee to reduce sediment flow and improve fish and aquatic species habitat.
These policies will allow the airport to continue to be operated in a manner which will provide economic development as well as provide public safety benefits and economic development opportunities which is consistent with the goal of making the Airport self-sustaining as possible.
