Giving a Story Its Voice: Producing the Audiobook for I’m Not Supposed to Know This

By August 6, 2026Audio, Studio Recording

Some stories deserve to be heard in the author’s own voice.

Tahoe Production House was honored to partner with author Solange Schwalbe to produce the audiobook edition of her powerful memoir, I’m Not Supposed to Know This: An Unlikely Account of Ground Zero After the 9/11 Attacks.

More than simply recording words on a page, this project focused on preserving the emotion, authenticity, and deeply personal experiences that define Solange’s story. The result is a professionally produced audiobook that allows listeners to experience her journey exactly as she intended it to be told.

A Story That Deserves to Be Heard

I’m Not Supposed to Know This is a deeply personal memoir that chronicles Solange’s unique experiences before, during, and after the events of September 11, 2001.

The audiobook provides readers with an even more intimate connection to the story by allowing them to hear the emotion, pauses, and reflections that only the author herself can deliver.

As the audiobook companion to the hardcover, paperback, and eBook editions published by Amplify Publishing Group, this production expands the book’s reach to listeners around the world.

Creating a Professional Recording Environment

Recording an audiobook requires much more than placing a microphone in front of an author.

Every recording session is carefully planned to ensure consistent sound quality, clear narration, and a comfortable environment that allows the author to focus on telling their story.

For this project, Tahoe Production House provided:

  • Professional recording studio
  • Broadcast-quality microphone setup
  • Audio engineering throughout every session
  • Live recording support and coaching
  • Multiple recording sessions over several days
  • Careful monitoring for consistency and performance

Creating the right atmosphere allowed Solange to narrate her memoir naturally while maintaining the quality standards required for commercial audiobook distribution.

Navigating a Unique Recording Challenge

One aspect of this project made the recording process especially meaningful.

Because of health effects related to her experiences at Ground Zero, Solange occasionally experienced what she refers to as her “Ground Zero cough” during narration.

Rather than allowing those moments to interrupt the storytelling, our production process utilized careful punch-in recording techniques, allowing passages to be seamlessly re-recorded while maintaining the natural flow of her narration.

This thoughtful approach ensured the finished audiobook remained polished while preserving the authenticity of her voice.

Professional Audio Post-Production

Once recording was complete, the project entered an extensive post-production process.

Every chapter was carefully edited and mastered to meet the strict technical specifications required by today’s leading audiobook platforms.

Post-production included:

  • Dialogue editing
  • Noise reduction
  • Audio cleanup
  • Seamless punch-in integration
  • Loudness balancing
  • Mastering to ACX standards
  • Final quality control

The completed audiobook was delivered in professional formats suitable for distribution across Audible, Apple Books, Google Play, and other major audiobook retailers.

Built for Worldwide Distribution

Audiobook production requires precision.

Each chapter must meet exact technical standards before it can be accepted by commercial distribution platforms.

Our final deliverables included:

  • Mastered WAV files
  • Distribution-ready MP3 files
  • ACX-compliant audio formatting
  • Organized chapter files
  • Publisher-ready delivery package

These assets were delivered to both Solange Schwalbe and Amplify Publishing Group, ensuring the audiobook was ready for publication alongside the book’s print and digital editions.

The Power of Hearing the Author

While every book tells a story, an audiobook allows listeners to experience it differently.

Hearing an author’s own voice adds depth, emotion, and authenticity that cannot always be captured on the printed page.

For memoirs especially, narration becomes part of the storytelling itself.

Every pause, reflection, and moment of emotion creates a stronger connection between the author and the listener.

Helping Authors Bring Their Stories to Life

At Tahoe Production House, we’re passionate about helping authors transform manuscripts into engaging audio experiences.

Whether recording memoirs, business books, educational content, or fiction, our studio provides the professional recording environment, engineering expertise, and post-production services needed to produce broadcast-quality audiobooks.

We’re grateful to Solange Schwalbe for trusting us with such a meaningful project and to Amplify Publishing Group for the opportunity to help bring this remarkable story to listeners everywhere.

Because every story has a voice—and some stories are meant to be heard.
